Involving children in learning about art is a key part of Spring Workshop’s mission. For each exhibition we present, we organize an associated children’s workshop, hoping to give them a fresh entry point to understanding the show and to inspire their creativity!

Currently Spring is presenting Wu Tsang’s exhibition Duilian from March 12 to May 22, 2016. Duilian is a film installation that is the culmination of a decade-long research project by visual artist and filmmaker Wu Tsang and her six months in residence at Spring in 2015. The newly-commissioned film is loosely based on the life of Qiu Jin (秋瑾 1875–1907) and her calligrapher friend Wu Zhiying (吳芝瑛, 1867-1936) during the revolutionary period of modern China in the early 20th century. Qiu Jin also founded her own journal 中國女報 in 1906, that featured nationalist and feminist writings.

About the Children’s Book-Making Session
Learning from the artistic practice of in-depth research and creative reinterpretation of the past by Wu Tsang, the book-making session will invite children to engage with and creatively re-interpret the stories and poems of Qiu Jin and Wu Zhiying.

Led by educator Clara Cheung, the children will learn about the early 20th-century history of Qiu Jin and Wu Zhiying, then make their own books, re-interpreting poems by Qiu and Wu. The children will learn image-transfer and book binding techniques, and apply some basic ideas of book design layout during the workshop, then share their creations at the end.

About Clara Cheung
Clara graduated from Rhodes College in 2002 with majors in Fine Art and Computer Science and received her Master’s degree in Cultural Studies from Lingnan University. She is the founding member of the performance art group Project 226, the founder of C&G Artpartment, art director of the charity organization Art Together, and a part-time lecturer at Hong Kong Baptist University.
