Chong is the creative director and conductor of Studio C/Studio C ensemble, president of the Society of Malaysian Contemporary Composers (2017-2019), and is the artistic director of the Kuala Lumpur Contemporary Music Festival (2009) and SMCC’s SoundBridge Contemporary Music Festival (2013, 2015, 2017). The uniqueness of his music stems is not only from a rich palette of sounds, but his experimentation into traditions, infusing his own Chinese and multicultural Malaysian heritage into his work.

Chong has won many awards and commissions, including Prix Marcel Hastir, the Second Seoul International Competition, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra International Composers Award, Lutoslawski Award, BMW Award of Isang Yun Music Prize, a grant from the Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation “The Outstanding Young Malaysian Award”. Chong Kee Yong’s music has been hailed as “imaginative and poetic” by Peter Eötvös, and as “very inventive and artistically pure” by Jonathan Harvey.
